Book Club ~ Secret Stories Society ~ After School

Welcome to the After School Party!

Little J has always excelled in reading. He still does. However, with the new common core standards he is finding it difficult to express his comprehension in writing. His teacher thinks he gets so engrossed in his reading that he doesn't stop to write notes to himself.  One strategy he suggested was for him to place blank sticky notes in his book before he started reading.  They would serve as a reminder for him to jot down some thoughts, questions, ideas about the plot and characters, and make some inferences.

Kid's book club

After some discussion with Little J the idea of a secret book club was born. Of course you have to have a special name for such a club...we're now known as "The Secret Stories Society", shhh tell no one.  I designed special sticky notes on Vistaprint, and ordered pens with our logo too.  The goal of our book club is to teach him comprehension strategies and to encourage deeper thinking of books he reads through our discussions.

Our first book is The Homework Machine by Dan Gutman.  I ordered a hardback copy for Little J and a paperback one for myself on Amazon's used books.  You certainly can borrow from the library.

I'll arrange our first meeting once our sticky notes and pens arrive. I made this mysterious invitation to leave on his bed.  His book has been wrapped in brown paper to add to the mystery.  We'll be going to a cozy Starbucks so we can wrap up our evening with some hot cocoa!
