Our Babies Birds are Here

We discovered a bird's nest (we think they are Carolina Wren's) in one of our hanging baskets a couple of weeks ago. The mother bird laid one egg each morning until there were five eggs. After all the eggs were laid, we noticed that the mother bird stayed in her nest most of the day. We try to be quiet when we're near the nest, but every now and then we startle her out. We can't help but take a quick peak to see what's happening.

Mother bird flew out of her nest this morning as we were leaving for school. We took a quick peak and found three little chicks had hatched. Hopefully, the other two aren't far behind. I took a quick picture so we could look at them without disturbing them again. I was glad to see the mother bird had returned by the time I came home from dropping all the kids off.

I'm amazed at how small they are.  They are only about the size of the tip of your thumb.  What's even more amazing is that they will be ready to leave the nest in just another two weeks! We're reading from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
