Outdoor Science Game, "How to Mark Your Territory"

Little J has the book "Time for Kids Big Book of How".  It's a really fun science book for school age kids.  Little J is super curious and is always asking how things work or why something is the way it is, so he finds this book very interesting and spends a lot of time reading it.

At the end of each chapter there are two experiments that are easy for kids to do, most without much help from adults.  The first chapter of the book is about animals and one of the experiments is "How to Mark Your Territory".

It's a simple experiment/game where you fill a spray bottle for each participant with some water and a scent.  Little J did a mixture of water and peppermint extract and I did a mixture of vinegar and water.  You want to mix it so the scent is pretty strong.  One at a time, go outside and "mark your territory".  The goal is to spray your scent in an area and then the other person tries to find it.

We found that we needed to pick a small designated area to play in as it's harder than we thought it would be to find the scents.  Even then, we had to play "hotter/colder" to narrow down the area.
