October's 10 Easy and Inexpensive Ways to Show your Kids you Love Them

Aside from doing all typical things a parent does to show and tell their children to love them, there are plenty of ways to show your kids they're special and you love them. Here are 10 simple and inexpensive ways to do something out of the ordinary to let your kids know you're thinking of them and love them.

1.Take a hike together.  October is such a pretty month where we live.  The leaves have changed and many have fallen making a nice crunchy sound when you walk.  My kids love to talk to me while we walk.  I hear about things that happen at school that somehow don't come out at other times.

2. Our school is starting parent/teacher conferences this month.  When you visit your child's classroom, take a second to leave them a little note in/on their desk.  It will make them smile the next day.

3. Make up or pick a song to become "our song" between just you and that child.  Sing it to them often.

4.Start a shared journal.  I gave the one pictured to Little J.  We just write light hearted fun things back and forth to each other.  It's not meant to take the place of actually saying "I love you", but just a place for us to write thoughts to each other.

5. Do something to make their Halloween costume personalized.  You don't have to make their costume, but even a store bought costume can be made more special with a little thought.  Last year, Sassyfras was Tinkerbell.  I made a special necklace of pixie dust for her to wear.  We also made personalized candy buckets.

6. Be on time to pick them up.  It makes them feel important and safe. But that said, don't beat yourself up for not being on time every now and then...it happens to the best of us!

7. Teach them how to make a simple snack for themselves if they are young or a whole meal if they are old enough.  Teaching a child to be independent is a wonderful gift of love.

8. Make their beds warm and snugly.  The nights are getting chilly where we live and we let the temp drop in the house at night, so warm and cozy beds are so nice.  Besides, they sleep...you sleep, right?!

9. Put their favorite meals on your menu rotation.  Make sure they know you made it especially because you know they like that meal.

10. Bring them a small treat from the grocery store.  It can even be something that is already part of your list, but make it something that is their favorite.  For example, I rotate favorite cereals or ice cream flavors with the kids.

Great list! I especially love #2. My stoic son would get a kick out of this even if he never said.

I love your monthly lists so much. The ideas are so easy to incorporate into every day busy life yet they have so much impact on our kids. I've featured you today on my blog as one of my favourites from last weeks Weekly Kids Co-op. I'd love to invite you to link up at The Sunday Parenting Party tomorrow as well.
