Swallowtail Caterpillars Starting their Transformation

Swallowtail caterpillar

One of our swallowtail caterpillars has settled down and looks like it's going to begin its chrysalis. It stopped eating yesterday morning and crawled up and down and around and around for quite sometime...like it was looking for something.

We placed a couple of our leftover sticks from our stick painting project in the habitat and sure enough it found the stick.  It stopped moving, then began writhing a bit before settling into this shape.  It's firmly attached to the stick by its tail and has been movement free for hours now.

Then we noticed a second caterpillar doing "the walk about", so we've put another stick in the habitat.  It's now settling into place on that stick as well.  So amazing and exciting!

We just had our Monarch Caterpillars do the same thing this week. It's so neat to watch!

That is so great. I've not tried a caterpillar/butterfly experiment before. I am afraid I'll kill it.
