Montessori Inspired Bird Activities

Photobucket

In these pictures, Sassyfras is working with 3 part cards that I downloaded for free from Montessori Materials.  The set includes nine commonly recognized birds.  I split the set to make it easier for them to complete.

We started by sitting down and looking at the pictures together.  Sassyfras and Juiciness can't read, but they did a great job matching all the names of the birds correctly.  They've now progressed to being able to tell me the names of each bird.

I'm not leaving Little J out of our bird study!  Little J loves to use the computer, so getting him to look up some bird related vocabulary was pretty easy.  I gave him the list below and set him up with a couple of kid friendly websites.  He also used some of our nonfictional books to learn more.

www.brainpop.com (this is a site we use through his school, but you can get a free trial, or perhaps your local school has an active link).

Also attached to his bird vocabulary list is my cheat sheet of some bird characteristics.

This is a great study! How neat that you can use BrainPop through J's school. Ours has subscription to raz-kids, which is also rather nice.
