The eastern tent caterpillars that Little J kept in his critter box are beginning to emerge from their cocoons. The first couple came out this afternoon. One would think the cocoon would break in half or have some momentous event. However, the moth simple burrows a small hole at one end of the cocoon and out it comes. We didn't actually see that part. Little J just noticed one perched on a branch.
We took them outside and left the lid to the box open for them to leave when they were ready. He of course gave the speech, "I'm going to miss you. I hope you have a fun life." It should just be a matter of a day or so before they have all hatched and he is looking for another "pet".
