Good Night, Sweet Butterflies Art Project for Toddlers

butterfly craft for kids

Juiciness and Sassyfras have just started their study of insects.  We read the book, "Good Night, Sweet Butterflies" by Dawn Bentley.  It is a cute book about different butterflies that one by one go to sleep for the night.

I gave them paper cutouts of butterflies and provided them with metallic paints.  I then helped them sprinkle a little glitter on each one.  If you do it on a tray and help them it really isn't too messy.  Also, I have found that while the Martha Stewart brand glitter is more expensive, it is good quality and has small holes for pouring...just use your craft store coupon and the price isn't too bad.  Once they dried we glued them on another piece of paper and folded their wings forward.

Pretty butterflies! You should mount them in a frame. :)

The little girl I care for loves this book! They love touching and feeling the butterflies. We are doing a caterpillar to butterfly theme next week and this will work in well!

Ooh, I need to look for metallic paints. Both the book and the art look very pretty and cheerful. I am still not brave enough for glitter in the house though :)
